Grandparents Raising Grandchildren and Troy Orthodontics Helps Teen Get Braces Posted: September 08, 2014

Lauren, 14, of Oak Park is smiling a bit brighter these days thanks to the efforts of her mother, OLHSA’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program and Troy Orthodontics. Teresita Cochran began raising her daughter, Lauren, as well as her young grandson and found hope through the OLHSA’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group meetings.

It was through the OLHSA program that Cochran met the group’s leader, Lisa Grodsky. Cochran reached out to Lisa after attempting to get braces for her daughter, Lauren, who had complained of pain in her mouth for three years.

“Let me tell you, it’s difficult to explain to a child why their medical insurance doesn’t cover certain dental procedures,” said Cochran. “I was at my wits end and didn’t know what to do.” After a long search, she connected with Grodsky, explained the situation and hoped for an answer.

This spring, Grodsky called Cochran with wonderful news. Her children’s own orthodontists, Dr. Timothy M. Williams and Dr. Niyati A. Patel of Troy Orthodontics, were willing to help at a significantly reduced cost. Cochran’s daughter arrived several days later to a warm welcome from the staff and after her consultation, x-rays and measurements were complete, Lauren received her braces in the beginning of summer.

Teresita says she is thankful for the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program, and especially for Grodsky, whose “dedication and diligence” is helping bring a permanent beautiful smile to a young girl’s face.
