Free refrigerator program helps client in the nick of time Posted: March 12, 2013

OLHSA is pleased to have partnered with the Michigan Community Action Agency Association (MCAAA) and DTE Energy to help its most vulnerable citizens save energy through the Free Refrigerator Assistance program.  Since October of 2012, OLHSA has provided over 275 clients with a new energy-efficient refrigerator.  In addition, OLHSA has also serviced 24 households in Macomb County and 229 households in Wayne County through this program.

The program, led by OLHSA’s Affordable Assistance, provided new refrigerators to homeowners with active DTE accounts who satisfied the income guidelines and had an older refrigerator (manufactured December of 2000 or earlier) that they were willing to exchange.  Hundreds of eligible clients in the tri-county region were invited to participate in the program through mass mailings, while others contacted OLHSA through word of mouth.

Thornton Davis was one of the clients who participated in this program. Thornton’s daughter Tanya Johnson says the assistance program “couldn’t have happened to him at a better time.” That’s because Thornton’s previous refrigerator had stopped working a week before sending in his application. Thornton said he is very pleased with his new refrigerator and that he is “grateful for being a recipient for the program.”

We would like to express our gratitude to MCAAA and DTE Energy for their partnership and support, and we look forward to working with them in the future on more energy-saving programs for our clients and neighbors!
